From January 1st through January 21st, Evergreen Foursquare Church is sponsoring a 21 day spiritual focus called Pray, Fast and Find. The following is a handout we reviewed in church to focus our attention for the upcoming event. I encourage you to use this handout before you start your 21 day journey and also use it as a daily reminder throughout your 21 days praying, fasting and finding.
Reflection for 21 Days to Pray, Fast and Find
Scriptures of Focus
“Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice. Let your reasonableness be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand; do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me—practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you” (Phil. 4:4-9).
“Continue steadfastly in prayer, being watchful in it with thanksgiving. At the same time, pray also for us, that God may open to us a door for the word, to declare the mystery of Christ, on account of which I am in prison— that I may make it clear, which is how I ought to speak. Walk in wisdom toward outsiders, making the best use of the time. Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person” (Col. 4:2-6).
Thankfulness (what am I thankful for)
Write down some of the good work God has done in your life. Write down answered prayers and big things you are thankful for.
Pray (pray more about what really matters)
Where do you need discernment, wisdom or understanding?
Who are some people you should pray for?
What miracle(s) are you praying for?
Spend some time talking with God and listening to Him. What his He saying to you?
Fast (what are you going to give up)
(Read Isaiah 58)
Ask the Lord what he would like you to give up for 21 days. Maybe you won’t eat lunch, maybe you won’t consume added sugar, maybe you won’t use social media in the evenings. Maybe you won’t buy Starbucks or fast food. Just pick something that is meaningful and will help you focus daily on God. Don’t be legalistic, but prayerfully consider what would work best for you. Please do not give up food if you are struggling with any kind of eating disorder. This does not have to be a food fast for it to be valuable. Write down what God puts on your heart.
Find (what are you looking for)
“Or what woman, having ten silver coins,[a] if she loses one coin, does not light a lamp and sweep the house and seek diligently until she finds it? And when she has found it, she calls together her friends and neighbors, saying, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found the coin that I had lost.’ Just so, I tell you, there is joy before the angels of God over one sinner who repents” (Luke 15:8-10).
What are you looking for? What have you lost? What do you need to find? What is worthy finding at the cost of giving your best effort? Write down what God reveals.
